Oddly enough, earthquakes themselves are not that dangerous. It's the falling debris that's dangerous. That's why the best place to be during a quake best is under a solid sturdy object like a heavy table or in a heavily supported doorway.
In the event of a quake during the night, have a pair of thick soled shoes inside a plastic bag for walking over any broken glass. Also have a crowbar to open jammed doors, and a flashlight wouldn't hurt.
